Sustainable Bedding Materials and Why They’re Great for Sleep

In recent years, more and more people have taken the plunge into sustainable living. Sustainability is beneficial for you, your family, and the environment, so it’s no wonder consumers are looking for more ways to make sustainable products a part of their day.

Whether it be vegan food or biofuel in your car, there are many ways to lead a more eco-friendly life. And get this, you can even do it while you’re asleep! That’s right; you can get bedding products such as sheets and mattresses that are made from naturally derived materials that are sustainably sourced, including ones with FSC certification.

Check out a few sustainable bedding materials and learn how they’re great for sleep below.

Natural Latex

Natural latex is a material used to create eco-friendly mattresses. Natural latex, made from the milky sap harvested from the rubber tree, can be used to create pillowy mattresses, pillows, and even sofas. Natural latex products are a fantastic eco-friendly choice because they require much less chemical use during production.

Combined with other organic materials like wool, natural latex mattresses provide various benefits to those who use them. They create a lightweight, cloud-like comfort, contouring your muscles and joints to give you the perfect sleeping experience.

Cotton

Cotton is considered a sustainable material because it is naturally derived and can be recycled and reused. This recycling process uses far less energy than it would take to farm new crops for use. Cotton is hypoallergenic and wonderfully lightweight, making it a very versatile material in mattresses, sheets, and other bed essentials.

Wool

As a biodegradable fiber, wool is an incredibly sustainable resource. Wool fibers tend to have a longer lifespan than many other textiles, which means that they offer an enhanced durability. Wool is hypoallergenic so reduces common bedroom allergies to dust and bed mites; temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking so resists mold and mildew; and naturally flame resistant.

Tencel

You may not be familiar with the term Tencel, but you’ve undoubtedly heard of eucalyptus. Tencel bedding is actually made from eucalyptus and contains no plastic, petroleum, or petrochemicals. To make these products, manufacturers use a closed-loop process in which wood is processed into a fiber using a non-toxic solvent called amine oxide. Tencel bedding is better for the environment because the production saves up to 96% of the water and 30% of the energy that would be used to make cotton sheets.

Eucalyptus bedding comes with several benefits, including being lightweight and smooth. It is especially great for people who have an issue with nighttime sweating. That is because TENCEL has moisture-wicking properties that distribute and evaporate moisture across the bedsheet more efficiently than other materials.

Bamboo

Many people who commit to more natural living opt for bamboo bedding. Bamboo bedding is incredibly popular for many reasons. First, bamboo grows very rapidly and can be grown without pesticides. It regrows naturally, making it a regenerative plant that is perfect for creating many products. Bamboo also produces 35% more oxygen than trees, which is excellent for climate change.

Bamboo bedding provides multiple benefits for the user, as well. People who sleep with bamboo sheets and pillowcases experience better skin and hair, as the product is very smooth and produces little friction. It also has antimicrobial properties, meaning it doesn’t trap any bacteria from your skin or hair.
